Creating Your Own Go-To Countryside Getaway
YAMANA HOUSE is located in Miyoshi, Minamiboso, about a two-hour drive from central Tokyo.
The 3000-tsubo (approximately 9,900 square meters) site of YAMANA HOUSE compactly includes a traditional Japanese house (kominka) said to be over 300 years old and continuous since the Edo period, fields that have long been fallow, and a small hill/back mountain soaring behind it.
YAMANA HOUSE, which started in the spring of 2015, is a work-in-progress, \'incomplete\' satoyama (traditional managed woodland/countryside). Under the theme of \'Shared Satoyama,\' we began by thoroughly cleaning the kominka, which had been vacant for over ten years and was in a ghost house state, and have been proceeding with the renovation of the satoyama through DIY, maintenance of the back mountain, and utilization of the fallow fields.
Until the early Showa era, satoyama were formed by the cooperative efforts and wisdom of the people living there. YAMANA HOUSE is a new form of satoyama based on sharing, operating with modern technology and ideas.
We will continue our experimental endeavors based on the spirit of Do It Yourself (creating things we can enjoy ourselves), focusing not only on the \'necessities of life\' (clothing, food, and shelter) but also on recreation and learning, as a place where people and nature can circulate.
